Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is NOT considered contraindicated, but rather safe with careful patient selection, in most women who request it, in spite of the initial poor results analysis and subsequent drastic change in practices since the Women's Health Initiative was first published.
Stratification by age decade (50s, 60s, 70s) and time since menopause (< vs > 10 y.) yeilds impressively different risk profiles. And to state the obvious, it is the younger/more recently or even peri-menopausal, who are suffering the symptoms for which HT would be considered.
Estrogen alone, in hysterectomized women, is significantly less risky than Estrogen+Progesterone, (NO incresased breast cancer risk in this particular cohort!) and risk profiles of various progestins are still being studied.
